Job Summary: 

The Materials Manager is a strategic leader responsible for planning, directing, and coordinating all activities related to the procurement, inventory control, warehousing, and distribution of materials. This role ensures the efficient and cost-effective flow of materials from suppliers through production to customer delivery, optimizing inventory levels and supporting operational goals.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supply Chain & Procurement Management:
    • Develop and implement strategies for the procurement of raw materials, components, and supplies to support production schedules.
    • Manage supplier relationships, including supplier selection, qualification, negotiation, and performance reviews.
    • Lead contract negotiations to secure favorable terms, including pricing, quality, and delivery.
    • Mitigate supply chain risks and develop contingency plans for critical materials.
  • Inventory Control & Warehousing:
    • Establish and maintain optimal inventory levels to balance production needs with cost objectives and working capital targets.
    • Implement and oversee inventory management procedures, including cycle counting, physical inventories, and reconciliation.
    • Ensure accuracy of inventory records within the ERP/MRP system (e.g., SAP, Oracle).
    • Manage warehouse operations, including layout, storage, material handling, and shipping/receiving activities.
  • Production Planning & Scheduling:
    • Collaborate closely with Production, Sales, and Finance departments to develop and maintain an accurate Master Production Schedule (MPS).
    • Ensure material availability to meet production plans and on-time delivery commitments to customers.
    • Utilize MRP/ERP systems to plan material requirements and manage shortages.
  • Team Leadership & Development:
    • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of buyers, planners, and warehouse personnel.
    • Set clear performance objectives, conduct regular performance reviews, and foster a culture of continuous improvement.
    • Allocate resources effectively to meet departmental goals.
  • Performance Metrics & Continuous Improvement:
    • Develop and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) such as Inventory Turnover, Days of Supply, On-Time Delivery from Suppliers, and Procurement Cost Savings.
    • Analyze data to identify trends, inefficiencies, and opportunities for improvement.
    • Lead or participate in continuous improvement initiatives (e.g., Lean, Six Sigma) to streamline processes and reduce costs.
  • Compliance & Systems:
    • Ensure all materials management activities comply with company policies and relevant regulatory requirements.
    • Maintain the integrity and data accuracy of the company's ERP/MRP system.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in supply chain management, Business Administration, Logistics, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience: Minimum of 10+ years of progressive experience in materials management, supply chain, or procurement, with at least 5+ years in a leadership or supervisory role.
  • Certifications (Preferred): APICS CPIM (Certified in Production and Inventory Management) or CSCP (Certified Supply Chain Professional) certification is highly desirable.

Technical Skills & Competencies:

  • ERP/MRP Systems: High proficiency with ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics) and advanced knowledge of MRP principles.
  • Analytical Skills: Strong data analysis and problem-solving skills with the ability to make data-driven decisions.
  • Negotiation: Expert negotiation skills with a proven track record of achieving cost savings.
  • Leadership: Demonstrated ability to lead, motivate, and develop a high-performing team.
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with all levels of the organization and with external suppliers.
  • Organizational Skills: Exceptional organizational and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of inventory management principles, demand planning, and procurement best practices.
